black screen after playing rebooted now getting system update message

I'm on 17150 I was playing my screen went black I rebooted and I got a system update message I don't think there is a new dash out...
my avatars are missing/blank.. I did the avatar update a few hours ago is there anyway that update got messed up an that's why its asking me to update?
maybe this has happend to you before.
is it safe to update?
